{"id":476,"date":"2010-08-04T19:44:15","date_gmt":"2010-08-04T19:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fruitsinfo.com\/fruit-facts\/?p=476"},"modified":"2010-08-04T19:44:15","modified_gmt":"2010-08-04T19:44:15","slug":"fdi-in-retail-could-bring-down-vegetables-fruits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fruitsinfo.com\/fruit-facts\/2010\/08\/fdi-in-retail-could-bring-down-vegetables-fruits\/","title":{"rendered":"FDI in retail could bring down vegetables, fruits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW DELHI: Opening multi-brand go to FDI, on which the government has sought public comments, could stimulate investments in cold chains and lead to a drop in prices of vegetables and<a title=\"fruitsinfo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fruitsinfo.com\" target=\"_blank\"> fruits<\/a>, research firm Crisil said on Tuesday&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8230;allowing foreign direct investments (FDI) in multi-brand trade has possible to reduce the prices of fresh food produce such as fruits and vegetables in India greater than the durable,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_494\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fruitsinfo.com\/fruit-facts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/fruit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-494\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-494\" title=\"fruit\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fruitsinfo.com\/fruit-facts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/fruit-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Sweet Fruits\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fruit stimulates the memory<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The change in FDI policy is likely to stimulate a flow of investments from organised retailer and logistics companies into establishing quality supply-chain infrastructure for fresh fruits and vegetables, Cirsil said.<\/p>\n<p>The wastage in the supply chain and the commission to trade intermediaries drive up the final price paid by Indian consumers for fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndian consumers pay nearly 2-2.5 times the price paid to a farmer as compared to 1-1.5 times in developed markets where the penetration of organised retail is much higher,\u201d Director of Crisil Research Mr Nagarajan Narasimhan said.<\/p>\n<p>India does not allow FDI in the politically responsive multi-brand retail sector but 51 per cent foreign investments is permitted in single-brand retail.<\/p>\n<p>The Industrial department had released a discussion paper on opening the multi-brand retail sector to FDI and sought public comments.
