Florida orange fruits estimate increased slightly in March

The Orange fruits has shown increase in their yield in the state of Florida. It is analyzed that the outcome of the orange crop estimate has slightly increased for the month of March increasing the yield by around 2 million boxes compared to last month.

Children getting free fruit and vegetables

More than 11,000 children ranging from low-income families in Blackburn and Darwen could now get free fruit and vegetables as part of a good living drive.

Until now parents will get vouchers for milk and newborn’s formula free of charge under the long-running Welfare Food Scheme.

But those who will qualify for the scheme could now get fresh fruit and vegetables.

Food Safety Facts for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The summer season brings with it more food choices than are usually available to Canadians in the winter. A wider array of fruits and vegetables are accessible to us as they come into season and we tend to eat more fresh food as opposed to frozen, canned or processed foods. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is issuing the food security fact sheet Food Safety Facts for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables to remind consumers about secure preparation and handling of fresh produce.

While food safety is significant all the time, safe food handling is particularly significant in the summer months because: micro organisms grow well in warm humid weather; – Canadians tend to eat more fresh produce in the summer; and – more people are preparing foods outdoors where they may not have access to sinks, clean water, refrigeration, clean kitchen implements or fresh surfaces on which to prepare food.

Ukraine: prices for bananas and citrus fruits declined

The wholesale prices for bananas and citrus fruits to some extend have decreased since the previous week on the market of Ukraine. According to a forecast, the prices for tangerines have decreased the more dramatically down to 25% in standard during one week. The wholesale prices for oranges have drastically gone down to 13%, for lemons – 3%. The wholesale price for bananas has decreased in the average 2% in Kyiv since the previous week.

Fruit and vegetable prices take roller-coaster ride

LAHORE: Sunday Bazaar visitors wild about unstable fruit and vegetable prices this week too. Sugar prices differ but the difference was just slight.

Dry fruit was a popular item and fish sales were also high.

Shortage of vegetables, particularly tomatoes, was reported in many bazaars but shopkeepers said it was because fruit-market traders were not actually selling the vegetable at the price on the rate-list.

Banana prices continuous to increasing

According to information given by the specialists of “Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits” journal, from the beginning of this week banana price have started to grow rapidly. On Monday the wholesale companies had mentioned the sales prices up to $14-14.7/box. This price is actually significantly higher than the price level recorded in the end of past week when the variety was within $11.9-13.1/kg depending from excellence and volume of the commodity.

The market players predicted that the price for bananas would continue increasing.

China levies 30 percent tax on bananas

Apart from delays in travel time and difficulties in getting payment from Chinese businessmen, Taiwan exporters also face import duties as high as 30 percent on shipments of bananas to China, a fruit distributor said yesterday.

Peng Sheng-fu, deputy manager of the Taiwan Provincial Fruit Distribution and Co-op Association, said Taiwanese banana exports to China are levied with a 30 percent duty — 13 percent in customs duty and 17 percent value-added tax.

Prices skyrocket as retailers mint money

PESHAWAR: Sharp increase in the prices of daily using commodities, particularly edibles fruits, in the whole month of Ramazan has made life miserable for people in the NWFP metropolis, while the district government and the price control committees have kept a quiet over the whole situation.

The highest increase could be witnessed in the prices of beef and mutton, as butchers have been charge consumers far higher than the official price list, convincing the people to focus on the buying poultry. The prices of poultry, which were Rs. 100 per kg before Ramazan, have come down to Rs 70 per kg, but due to the high augment in its demands, it is feared that the prices of poultry may show an upward trend.

Fruit, vegetable prices remain unchecked

HYDERABAD: The Consumer Rights Forum (CRF) has criticized the government functionaries for their breakdown to give break for the consumers during Ramazan despite the prime minister’s directives.

In a statement, the CRF said prices of things of daily use, vegetables and fruits continued to increase without any proper check by the Price Control Magistrates, who it said might not ensure implementation of even price lists, issued by the District Administration. It has called on the government to review its policy of conditional sale of sugar with other ripe items at the utility stores.

Hollywood’s New buzz in Fruit Addiction

There has been some recent buzz in Hollywood about so-called “strawberry cocaine.” TMZ did some crack study and got the low down on the blow.

Flavored cocaine is not anything new, we’re told. Law enforcement basis tell us that since the 80s people have been trade coke in all sorts of flavors, as well as rum and cherry, and now it appears strawberry are back and all the rage.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ, which strawberry flavoring is additional to the drug to give it its fruity flavor. Years ago just adding food coloring was big thing– brown and also red cocaine was the talk of the town. Theoretically, you can make or add any flavor you’d like to the drug.

Americans eat less fruits and veggies

NEW YORK – The U.S. government has recently bumped up its recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption, and a recent study suggests it’s extremely likely Americans aren’t keeping up.

The United States Department of Agriculture had long suggested that everybody to get at least five servings of fruits and veggies daily, but adjusted that requirement to 2 to 6-1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables daily in its new MyPyramid food guide, Dr. Patricia Guenther of the USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion and colleagues note.

The guidelines state recommended eating by age and sex, and spell out the variety of vegetables people should eat.

To investigate how many people were meeting the new standards — and the old ones — Guenther and her team looked at single-day food eating data for 8,070 people participating in the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Sticker would tell the ripeness of fruits and vegetables

TUCSON, Ariz. wasting money on bad fruit could become a thing of the past.

A University of Arizona professor has invented a sticker that could tell consumers if a fruit or vegetable is ripe. That means no more waiting for avocados to season or throwing out fuzzy peaches.

The stickers would be available to growers next year and must make their way into supermarkets within two to three years, said Mark Riley, who is a UA assistant professor of agricultural and bio-systems engineering.
